Megan Gillett is an award-winning film and media composer, specialising in hybrid orchestral scores with a Celtic influence. Known for her traditional, ethereal sound, her music often draws inspiration from Celtic culture and the beauty of the natural world. Consequently, her compositional style is best suited to the fantasy, adventure and documentary genres in film, television and video games. Despite this, Megan is an extremely versatile composer with a talent for storytelling through music.
Described by Michael McGlynn as having an “understanding of [Celtic] sonority beyond the norm”, Megan’s devotion to music composition and improvisation has already garnered widespread recognition. Recently winning Best Score at the Solent Film and Media Awards 2025 for her work on Malevolent, she is making a name for herself in the independent film scene. She has also gained experience working alongside Ivor Novello-nominated film composer Chris Roe.
Megan is an excellent improviser and multi-instrumentalist, ensuring that emotion and intuition is at the heart of her composition process. Raised in her family’s ancestral home in the Kentish countryside, she has possessed advanced aural abilities from a very young age, often heard singing back the pitches and melodies of the world around her. At the age of four, she urged her parents to let her take piano lessons, marking the beginning of her classical training. The piano would become her primary instrument and the basis of many of her compositions. Since then, she has developed a particular interest in traditional Irish and Celtic music, regularly playing the tin whistle at folk sessions and cèilidhs. Her latest venture is learning how to play the uilleann pipes.
Megan is currently studying a BA in Music at the University of Southampton, where her focus lies in composition and ethnomusicology. Her degree includes a year abroad in Ireland, based at University College Cork. She is a member of the Ivors Academy and belongs to the Alliance of Women Film Composers. Alongside music, Megan is a keen hiker and can often be found up a mountain or in a country pub.
